Dolbelidr was built in 1929 in the very popular Arts and Craft style of that era but with a French Chateau in mind. It was built by Lloyd Mainwaring – a colourful“character” who used to land his airplanes in the neighbouring field. The model airplanes in the Drawing Room display cabinets are actual replicas of the airplanes that he flew whilst in the R.A.F. The architect was Sir Guy Dawber who was, at the time, president of the Royal Institute of British architects. Lloyd Mainwaring lived out his life at Dolbelidr and it has been in the family ever since. Although the house has of course been renovated and modernised, the heart of Dolbelidr remains as it was back in the 1920s. The servants’ bells remain (although I would imagine nothing would happen should you ring one!) and the large decorative wardrobe on the landing was designed and built by Susie Mainwaring (the little girl in the portrait in the Drawing Room). There are family portraits, lovingly collected memorabilia and fascinating history of Dolbelidr throughout the house. We only ask that you love and respect these collections as much as we do.
Feel free to read our books and magazines and to enjoy our plentiful supply of board games in case of rainy days.
Lorna will meet you on arrival. She was personally involved in the renovations and is passionate about the house. There will be a generous welcome pack of local produce, plus the “usual” tea, coffee and milk. We are very happy to welcome up to two well behaved dogs on condition that they are not allowed onto the furniture or upstairs. We are happy to offer blankets/towels for rubbing down your dogs after exploring the countryside and there is a enclosed and gated stable yard where they can be left safely to enjoy their own solitude if you go out for the day. Children are very welcome and we have a travel cot and highchair. We only ask that you bring bedding for babies.
